Did you know that…

Terrariums are Created Ever Since the Mid 19th Century!

The very first terrarium was designed in 1842 by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, a botanist. Nathaniel was fascinated about insect behavior and had incidentally left one of the jars used for observing insect behavior unattended. Unexpected by Nathaniel, a fern spore within the glass walls of the enclosed jar germinated and grew into a fern – and thus the first terrarium was created.

Note: News of the unintended incident spread like wildfire and the very first few terrariums were named as ‘Wardian cases‘. In memory of Nathaniel Bagsaw Ward.

The Longest Surviving Terrarium is Still Well and Thriving Even After 60 Years!

The owner and designer of this terrarium is David Latimer, an engineer. David latimer has only given his terrarium 1 pint of water and has only opened it once in its entire 60 years. It has thrived well till this very day. To read up more about David Latimer’s terrarium, click on this link!

The Entire World is a Closed Terrarium in and of Itself!

That’s really surprising isn’t it?! If you were to spare a little thought about it, the world is indeed an enclosed terrarium! The analogy is fairly straightforward:

  1. Rainforests and shrubberies represent the plants in your terrarium.
  2. The ocean represents the water supply for your terrarium. During the day, heat from the sun causes water to evaporate and as more water vapor accumulates, cloud layers are formed. Precipitation then results in rainfall which reintroduces water to the ecosystem, thus completing the water cycle.
  3. The earth is isolated in the vastness of space, analogous to a closed terrarium with its own ecosystem isolated to a large extent from the external ecosystem.

Thus this gaseous exchange and water cycle enables for a self sustainable ecosystem!
