Paper Mache Mask

We all know what performative mask is – that is, a mask representing a character in a theatrical performance – but what is a paper mache mask?

First, we need to know what Mache is. The Mache (pronounced ma – shay) is a popular craft technique which many assume originated in France because of the French name but actually originated in China during the Han dynasty. This ancient technique was used to make army helmets, which was coated with many layers of adhesive to toughen it, and everyday items such as pot lids.

Through trade with China, Japan and Persia (present day Iran) brought the Paper Mache technique to their respective countries and made celebratory decorations and masks.

As Mache is the French word for “mashed,” Paper Mache utilizes paper cut into small bits and reinforced with textiles, or bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste. Sometimes, pulp is used instead.

In this 1.5 hr workshop, participants will get to indulge in the simple and upcycling-friendly craft of Paper Mache to make their own performative or decorative masks using old papers, glue, and water. Use your mask creations in Masquerade or Halloween parties, in school plays, or just indulge yourselves in pretend-playing your favourite characters such as Spider Man, Princess Elsa, or the Phantom of the Opera in the comfort of your home.

It does not matter whether you’re young, or the young at heart. This is a guaranteed fun and engaging workshop that awakens the inner creative child in all of us!

Our Paper Mache Workshops provide an opportunity for participants to engage in experiential learning and hands-on activities. Through this approach, participants can learn more effectively and retain knowledge for longer periods.
