Terrarium FAQ

Terrariums are miniature worlds to grow plant ecosystems. They are usually grown in transparent containers such as glass jars or containers and one key feature of terrariums is that they require lower maintenance than your regular potted plant!

There are generally two types of terrariums - enclosed and open terrariums. At EcoPonics, we offer a variety of glass containers to choose from, including our popular Classic closed and Angled open terrariums.

Slow-growing plants are recommended for a terrarium environment. At EcoPonics' Terrarium Workshops, we provide you with Fittonia plants, also known as nerve plants due to the beautiful pink or white vein patterns on their leaves.

We provide coloured sand, a variety of stones, as well as figurines for $1 and up. Otherwise, you can choose to add your own decorations and figurines into your terrarium as well.

Enclosed terrariums require water every month; 8 full sprays / 5-6 tablespoons per watering. Semi-enclosed terrariums such as the Egg terrariums can be watered every 2 weeks. Ensure that your terrarium is aired for 3 days before each watering session in order to allow the stale water within the terrarium to evaporate. This will help prevent the growth of mould.

Open terrariums require water every 2 days; 5 full sprays / 2-3 tablespoons per watering.

Yes! You will be able to bring back the terrarium that you built with your very two hands straight after the workshop. Remember to water it!

Keep your terrarium away from heat sources, such as beside an oven or computer. Indirect sunlight or indoor lighting is recommended for your terrarium. Do not place your terrarium in direct sunlight as your terrarium functions like a greenhouse - heat is easily trapped within the glass container, which may cook your plants.

Our facilitators would start by explaining the basic concepts regarding terrariums, before moving onto the hands-on terrarium making activity. The session would conclude with our facilitators sharing some maintenance tips, and a photo-taking session with everyone holding their completed terrariums.

The required materials include a glass jar or container, gravel, dried moss, soil, and most importantly a suitable plant! You would also need some tools to help you with the planting. All these materials are provided for you at our Terrarium Workshops, along with coloured sand, stones and figurines for decoration.

No prior knowledge or experience is required for any workshop at EcoPonics! Our Terrarium Workshops are suitable for beginners and our skilled facilitators will bring you through the process of building your terrarium step-by-step. Not only would it be an enriching and fulfilling experience for you, but you also get to keep your very own handmade terrarium at the end of the workshop.

In the hustle and bustle of Singapore's city life, terrarium are wonderful additions to our home and office spaces. They add a touch of greenery to our otherwise monotone surroundings which helps us to relax and unwind. A terrarium is a great starter plant for you if you want to get into the hobby of collecting plants, even if you don't have green fingers! Terrariums do not require much maintenance or watering, which makes them suitable for individuals with busy lifestyles.

Any types of events would go well with a terrarium building session, including corporate team-building events, school workshops, birthday / hen's parties, and even casual gatherings with your friends and family. Don't hesitate, book a Terrarium Workshop with EcoPonics today!

Our Terrarium Workshops are suitable for all ages, including primary school kids. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children as they would need help handling the fragile glass containers.

Our studio workshop can hold up to 50 participants for a Terrarium Workshop. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, our studio's current maximum limit is 25 participants. For groups larger than 25, there are two options. 1. You can choose to book your own venue with a larger maximum capacity and our facilitators can travel to your location. 2. You can book a virtual Terrarium Workshop instead for an unlimited number of participants.

For virtual Terrarium Workshops, all the materials you need would be packed and delivered to you in an individual terarrium kit before the day of the virtual workshop. Our facilitators would then be conducting the workshop over Zoom, Microsoft Teams or any other online platform of your choice, and you and all of the other participants can enjoy building your own terrariums from the comfort of your own homes.

EcoPonics has a dedicated team of staff which ensures the planning and preparation for your workshop is done in no time at all. We are able to cater to all types of events, including corporate team-building events, school workshops, birthday / hen's parties, gatherings with your friends and family, and more! Our professionally-trained workshop facilitators will guarantee a fantastic experience for all workshop participants, from the shyest individuals to outgoing ones, from young children to the young at heart. EcoPonics has conducted a countless number of workshops for a whole plethora of event types.
